Welcome to COLLEGE! Congratulations, you are about to have the time of your life. Possibly the best time of your life to be exact. I can tell you that college so far, has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Highschool, yeah, I enjoyed it… but College, I love it.
However, when going into my 1st year I never really had anyone to give me tips, or share information about college that potential professors, or even other students would forget to tell you.
And that is why I am here.
In this blog post I will give you all of the practical tips to help you during your first year at Conestoga College.
ALWAYS… and I mean ALWAYS listen to this piece of advice. It is acceptable not to listen if you like walking across campus to attend classes, but I am the complete opposite.
I am a person who is lazy and prefer my classes to be close to my car. Which brings me to… wait until your time tables come out to get a good idea of which lot to park in before buying your parking pass. It makes a huge difference in the winter when it’s cold and you have to trek 2KM for one class.
2. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CSI’s SERVICE HUB (Conestoga Students Inc)
I cannot stress this enough… The CSI Service Hub really saved me big time when I had projects due and a boat load of things to print, laminate, bind etc. It’s fast, efficient, and has amazing people present there that help you every step of the way.
Unfortunately for me, I only found out about the CSI Hub 2nd Semester of 2nd Year so it was a struggle before then not knowing about it. Which is why I highly encourage you to use their services to your advantage.
3. EAT AT THE VENUE, PLAY TRIVIA, WATCH LIVE MUSIC
Every Tuesday of my first and second year at Conestoga College, I went to the Venue – our college “bar.” Why? Well because every Tuesday is trivia day. It is so much fun, and I highly suggest dropping in, having some delicious chicken fingers and playing some trivia with a bunch of friends from your program.
On Thursdays the venue also has live music. The artists that preform are phenomenal, and make your experience at The Venue better… especially when you get to enjoy it with friends & food.
4. GO TO YOUR ORIENTATION
Orientation was a big thing for me when I first started. It made me introduce myself to classmates, professors, and other students at Conestoga. Orientation is always fun to go to because you get to learn more about your classmates, receive vital information about your program, and you get to talk to upper year students + graduated students about their experience in your program and outside of it.
It makes you feel much more comfortable about going to school for the first time, and guides you in the right path before school starts.
5. LINK YOUR STUDENT EMAIL TO YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL
Again, this is a tip I wish I received myself during first year because it really would’ve helped me out. If your student email is not linked to your personal it takes more effort to check, and you often forget about it.
One thing I did to ensure I didn’t miss any important emails was, link my student email to my personal email (Gmail). This re-directs all emails that would’ve gone to just your student account, now to both. I promise… this is very important to do, especially when you’re just starting out.
I PROMISE YOU…
These tips are obviously optional for you to listen to, but if you’re going to Conestoga soon please listen. I promise that these tips are practical, and will change your life during school.
